Luxury, Fashion, Africa

April 2019 Issue Cover
In the second edition under new owner and publisher, the Fashion handbook South Africa (FHBSA) launches a conversation on Luxury, Fashion, Africa.
#theaprilissue covers a dynamic mix of perspectives and inspiring thought starters in the context of luxury fashion in Africa, with the hope of pushing progressive and creative boundaries.
As a first step in this regard, here is an introduction to the brand new April 2019 cover. “My vision was to create a distinct and empowered image, a break from stereotypes, reflecting a modern narrative that originates in the past and resonates intuitively with the future,” says Publisher Leanne Tlhagoane.

Publisher’s Note
In my second edition of the Fashion handbook South Africa (FHBSA), the April ’19 issue launches a conversation on Luxury, Fashion, Africa.
Luxury fashion, much like everything else these days, is ‘fair game’. Precisely because we are living in an era that demands we forge a newer modern existence. For me this means a perfect moment to contemplate the pairing of luxury fashion and Africa.
Worlds apart or future worlds coinciding?
Inside #theaprilissue a cross-section of voices bring to the fore dynamic perspectives and inspiring thought-starters on Africa’s cultural heritage, natural resources and artisanal skills in the context of luxury fashion.
Helen Jennings Editorial Director of Nataal Media gives a concise overview of luxury fashion from across the continent. NicheLuxe founder, Annicia Manyaapelo shares her own story on entering the luxury market and with a keen focus on art and design also interviews artist Nandipha Mntambo and Hanneli Rupert, Founder and Creative Director of Okapi and Merchants on Long. Suzy Menkes, International Vogue editor and host of the Conde Nast International Luxury fashion event taking place this year in Cape Town over two days in April, answers some of our questions.
I hope the shared opinions and interviews stir up and spark off a gathering momentum around the potentials and possibilities of luxury fashion in Africa.
If we are intent on developing our intrinsic values both singularly and collectively as a continent, and as a people, whilst harnessing creative talent and investing in the fashion eco-system, then the seemingly impossible becomes possible.
In a spotlight on Modest Fashion, find out about the expanding notion of what is fashionable and the growing presence of modest dressing in South Africa as we interview instagram fashion star Thameenah Saint and founder of Bulbulia Threads, Tasleem Bulbulia.
And lastly, it would be remiss of me not to mention the cover image and fashion editorial outtakes.
My vision (for the cover ) was to create a distinct and empowered image, a break from stereotypes, reflecting a modern narrative of African Fashion that originates in the past and resonates intuitively with the future. The fashion editorial pages are a culmination of creative and design talent and IMO are bursting with excellence. It would be good to know if they delighted your eye as much as they did mine.
Until next time, may the winds of change be always at your back, inspiring you to greater heights.
My very best,
Leanne
